Statement:
My constant search and desire is to create objects which will inspire myself and others to use memories or imagination for interpretation of a dreamlike Still Life. Composition is an important element for me since it creates either static or a dynamic feel to each piece, as well as space to object ratio. Contrary to most Still Life masters, I have tried to remove a time frame from the equation so it doesn’t project a precise historical period for each piece but rather has a timeless feel to it. In some instances, I describe each object using the Cyrillic alphabet. This depicts what they are, or at least what I want people to perceive they are, and as each object is analyzed, it might appear to be something else or quite opposite.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
Greg Gregson (Grigoriev) was born in Russia in 1959 and grew up in Liepaja, Latvia. He attended the Drawing Academy starting at the age of 12. From 1980 to 1986 Greg studied in Moscow at the Industrial Design Institute. During this time, he took part in numerous underground and avant-garde exhibitions in Russia and the Baltic States. Greg immigrated to the United States in 1990 at which time he started to work and exhibit in Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 2002 Greg moved to New York City where he participated in several group shows at SoHo’s Art Space and, in 2006, debuted with his first solo show at the Kirk Gallery.
The artist was influenced by Russian Symbolism and Suprematism, predominantly by the works of Malevich, Tatlin and Sterenberg. Later he merged expressionistic techniques with surreal, dreamlike images which sometimes evolved into complete distortion. Deep earthy hues, delicate yet expressive gestures create these wonderfully organic abstract still lifes and landscapes.
Greg has been living and working in Chicago,IL since 2015. Exhibiting his work globally, numerous works have been installed in prestigious private collections throughout the United States and Europe.
